Portuguese in the ´divergent standardization system´ of the 20. Century and the tasks for a new “Common Portuguese”.

This research seeks to establish how the dual regulation process of the Portuguese language between Brazil and Portugal occurred. It led to two different standards - Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese - with the not inclusion of Portuguese Speaking Countries in Africa and Timor-Leste in the language management after the independence process (1975 / 2002). The work maps step by step the formation of language tools, from the ´spell division in 1911’, authorizing to call Portuguese a multi-centric language pervaded also by hierarchized colonial processes. The 21. Century, however, sees attempts to produce “common tools” for a broader management of the language, transforming the dual standardization matrix into a pluricentric one.
